Barcelona must pay Matheus Fernandes a million-dollar compensation. The Catalans have unlawfully fired the Brazilian midfielder. It is another financial blow for Barça. Fernandes filed a lawsuit against his former club and won. The dismissal is mainly attributable to chairman Joan Laporta.

Barcelona bought Fernandes from Palmeiras in January 2020 for around seven million euros. However, the then trainer Ronald Koeman gave the midfielder no more than seventeen playing minutes in the first team. In the Champions League, he came on on November 24, 2020 against Dynamo Kyiv (0-4 win). In the following season he was rented out by Barça to Real Valladolid. There too, Fernandes barely played and only played 166 minutes in three appearances.

After only two seasons in Catalan service, Barcelona decided to nullify the contract with Fernandes. On June 29, 2021, the midfielder’s ongoing contract until June 30, 2015 was terminated. He then returned to his old club Palmeiras. Because Fernandes disagreed with his dismissal, he appealed. He took Barcelona to court and claimed to be owed millions of euros by the club.

Mundo Deportivo now reports that the judge has ruled in favor of Fernandes. The Catalans have to pay him no less than eight and a half million euros because he was wrongfully fired. This miscalculation is mainly due to Joan Laporta. The chairman sent Fernandes away, but Barcelona is now literally and figuratively presented with the bill for this. The midfielder is rented out by Palmeiras to Red Bull Bragantino this season.
