Graham Potter will be Chelsea’s new manager, Fabrizio Romano has reported. On Wednesday morning, however, the news came somewhat unexpectedly that the Londoners did not wish to continue with Thomas Tuchel. However, Chelsea is moving on at lightning speed, because the club wants to present Potter, who has held the honors at Brighton & Hove Albion since 2019, within 24 hours.

Tuchel already lost eight points in the Premier League and went down in an embarrassing way on Tuesday evening during the first day of the Champions League on a visit to Dinamo Zagreb (1-0). For the American owners, it was enough to give the 49-year-old German his conge. Potter was subsequently put forward by the bookmakers as the lead candidate to succeed Tuchel. According to Sky Sports Chelsea owner Todd Boehly held talks with Potter for the first time on Wednesday and a verbal agreement has since been reached with the Brighton manager to get started at Stamford Bridge.

Talks continued early on Thursday morning, focusing on the legal details of his contract and the staff Potter will have to support at Chelsea. The Blues made it clear that they are willing to pay Brighton the contracted transfer fee of 13 million for Potter to Brighton. Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane, who are both out of work, and Sporting Portugal coach Ruben Filipe Marques Amorim were also all on Chelsea’s shortlist.

The 47-year-old Potter has been at the helm of Brighton & Hove Albion since May 2019. He finished ninth in the Premier League last season with the Seagulls and the new season has also started energetically. Brighton gave Erik ten Hag and Manchester United a painful defeat at Old Trafford (1-2) last month and is in fourth place with thirteen points after six competition matches.
