Ian Maatsen will finish the season at Borussia Dortmund, the German club officially announced. The 21-year-old left back comes from Chelsea and signed a six-month loan deal at Signal Iduna Park. Maatsen extended his contract in London last year until mid-2025, but has now opted for a temporary adventure elsewhere.

The rental deal gained momentum just under a week ago, after clarifying discussions took place between Dortmund, Chelsea and Maatsen's management. The fullback himself wanted to go BVB move, which meant that an agreement was quickly reached.

Chelsea initially felt more in favor of a direct takeover, in order to raise money for new acquisitions. However, Maatsen is now leaving for Dortmund on a rental basis. There is a good chance that both clubs will talk about a permanent transfer after this season.

Burnley, where Maatsen played last season and with whom he won promotion to the Premier League, and West Ham United also recently showed interest in the left back. However, the versatile winger sees more merit in a new adventure in a new competition.

Maatsen hardly featured in the plans of Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino this season, who usually made different choices in the left back position. The thirteen-time Dutch Junior international experiences stiff competition at Stamford Bridge and has only played once in the Premier League.

This season the counter stands at 400 playing minutes, spread over 16 games the Blues. Maatsen recently made his starting debut for Chelsea in the match against Crystal Palace (2-1 win). Remarkably, the left foot played that match as a right winger.

Maatsen will play outside England for the first time in his career. The wing defender played in the youth of Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV and exchanged the youth academy of the Eindhoven team for that of Chelsea in the summer of 2018.
