Deportivo La Coruña’s winning goal in the last minute of their 0-1 away match against FC Zamora could have been disastrous. Traveling fans of depor stormed to the edge of the grandstand to celebrate the goal, after which the gate gave way and two rows of people fell to the ground. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in the fall.

The Spanish champions of yesteryear have been playing at the third level of Spanish football since 2020, in Group 1 of the so-called Primera División RFEF. Deportivo is currently the leader in this and thanks to a goal from Alberto Quiles an important 0-1 victory was booked on Wednesday evening in injury time over low-flyer Zamora. The Deportivo players raced towards the corner of the field of the Estadio Ruta de la Plata, where a large number of accompanying supporters frantically celebrated the goal.

Television footage shows Deportivo supporters coming down to celebrate the goal as close as possible to the players. Partly because of this, two to three rows of people leaned against the part of the stand, which collapsed after a few seconds. As a result, the supporters who were cheering at the fence fell down. Their rescue was that there was little difference in height between the stands and the ground. The game could therefore be resumed and finished, as there were still a few minutes of stoppage time to play.

Deportivo communicates that a total of five people – including one with a possible broken ankle – have been transported to the hospital in Zamora. The rest of the fallen supporters could be treated on the spot by the medical staff present or the ambulances rushed to the scene. “The images speak for themselves. It is a miracle that no one was seriously injured or worse,” said a local police officer.
