Borussia Dortmund seems to have resigned itself to a departure from Jude Bellingham and the name of Cody Gakpo has been dropped in the search for a successor. The name of the Dutchman is mentioned by former international Lothar Matthäus. He sees the PSV player as an ideal replacement for Bellingham.

If it’s up to Matthäus, Gakpo is Bellingham’s successor as the Englishman BVB leaves. In his column for SPORTS PICTURE the 61-year-old breaks a lance for the Dutchman. “There is a World Cup revelation that Dortmund could replace Bellingham with and it is probably even cheaper,” wrote Matthäus. “I am talking about Dutchman Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.” According to the former captain of Germany, Gakpo played “ in a more defensively oriented Dutch team, in the advanced left half position.” “It is clear that he has a goal threat: he scored three goals at the World Cup”, Matthäus continued.

A cheaper alternative to Gakpo is the Spaniard Joan Gonzàlez from Lecce. According to la Gazzetta dello Sport has BVB the twenty-year-old midfielder in his sights, Bellingham should leave. Gonzàlez comes from the youth of Barcelona and made the switch from La Masía to the Serie A club last summer. This season he played in all sixteen games for Lecce and scored one goal and two assists. According to the pink sports newspaper, Gonzàlez should cost around fifteen million euros. His contract with Lecce runs until June 2027.

Gakpo is under contract with PSV until mid-2026. His good performance at the World Cup in Qatar has shaken up even more clubs. Before the World Cup, he was already emphatically followed by Leeds United and Manchester United and it almost came to a transfer to the former club. In addition to Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Liverpool and again Manchester United would also like to attract the attacker.
