Jack Butland has embarrassed himself with his impending move to Manchester United. Fans discovered that in 2017, the Crystal Palace goalkeeper, then employed by Stoke City, posted a tweet saying he would never leave for Manchester United to become a reserve goalkeeper. Twitter user Richard Farrell asked the goalkeeper at the time if he would consider a move to Old Trafford and if he could live with being second-choice behind De Gea. In response to that tweet, Butland wrote, “I would never leave to be second choice!”

Since David de Gea is the undisputed number one under Erik ten Hag, Butland will have to adapt to his role as ‘second fiddle’. The tweet was deleted by the goalkeeper, but fans had not forgotten Butland’s words. Butland’s transfer is expected to be finalized in the coming days. The nine-time England international serves as the successor to Martin Dúbravka, who returned early to his actual employer Newcastle United last week.
