The Olympique Lyon of Peter Bosz has encountered a major setback. Les Gones went down 0-1 in their own stadium on Sunday evening against Lille OSC, where Sven Botman was on the field for ninety minutes. Gabriel Gumundsson – former defender of FC Groningen – scored the only goal of the game. Olympique Lyon saw a goal by Lucas Paquetà canceled shortly before the end: a debatable decision by referee Clément Turpin and the VAR.

Olympique Lyon started the way up this month with victories at Olympique Marseille and OGC Nice, but last week points were lost again against RC Lens. With Lille, Peter Bosz’s team encountered an opponent who has also performed inconsistently this season and the first chances of the game were via Karl Toko Ekambi and Moussa Dembélé for the home team.

The game was broken open by Lille with 35 minutes on the clock, after Jonathan David had already shown himself on behalf of the visitors. That opening goal was partly due to Thiago Mendes, who failed to clear the ball head-on and allowed Gudmundsson to score his first goal for Lille. The former defender of FC Groningen made good use of that opportunity: 0-1. The goal was a bit out of proportion and did not change that.

Olympique Lyon remained the most dangerous team after the goal, which also resulted in great opportunities after the break. Lille gave up possession in the second half and could thank Zeki Çelik and goalkeeper Léo Jardim that great opportunities for Lucas Paquetà and Tino Kadewere did not result in a goal. Olympique Lyon seemed to get the deserved equalizer shortly before the end due to a major blunder by Jardim.

The Lille goalkeeper waited too long and thus offered Paquetà the opportunity to conquer the ball after he kicked into the ground. The Brazilian then pushed the ball into the empty goal. After VAR interference, referee Turpin decided to cancel the goal, due to a foul by Paquetà on Jardim. Partly because of this, it remained 0-1 in Lyon, as a result of which Bosz’s team is passed by Lille: Olympique Lyon is tenth, the reigning champion of France occupies eighth place.
