The players of 1. FC Köln can expect a big bonus if their opponent Bayern Munich, but Borussia Dortmund wins the Bundesliga on Saturday. German media report this, including Kicker and Express. The bonus has everything to do with a clause in the contract of Anthony Modeste, who made the switch from Köln to Dortmund last summer.
In the summer of 2022, Modeste made the switch from Köln to Dortmund for more than five million euros. A clause was included in his contract: if the striker became champion with his new club, Köln would receive ‘an amount with six zeros’. That now seems to be happening: if Dortmund wins at home against FSV Mainz 05, it is champion. Otherwise it depends on the result of Köln against Bayern.
If Köln, which is tenth, manages to keep Bayern on a draw or even win against Thomas Tuchel’s formation, then Dortmund is champion anyway. For a long time it seemed that Bayern was on its way to the eleventh championship in a row, but last week it went down at home against RB Leipzig (1-3). Dortmund then won 0-3 at FC Augsburg and took over the lead.
On the podcast Theken philosophers Köln coach Steffen Baumgart has already indicated that he has confidence in a good result against Bayern. “Borussia Dortmund (3-2, ed.) Couldn’t win with us, Leipzig (0-0, ed.) Couldn’t win with us. Bayern can try, but we will do everything we can to ensure that they do not win with us.” The meeting in Munich ended earlier this season in 1-1.
