Bologna achieved a great victory in Serie A on Monday evening. When they visited AS Roma, coach Thiago Motta's team was too strong 1-3. Goals were scored by Joshua Zirkzee, Alexis Saelemaekers and former FC Emmen midfielder Oussama El Azzouzi. Thanks to the victory over the direct competitor, the gap to sixth place has been temporarily increased to eight points, making the first qualification for the Champions League in sixty years very close.

El Azzouzi was given a starting spot by Motta and immediately showed his class in the fourteenth minute of play. The Moroccan international made it 0-1 with a nice bicycle kick from a cross from Riccardo Calafiori. The score was also 0-2 on the stroke of half time. This time, El Azzouzi acted as a pointer for Zirkzee, who scored his eleventh goal of the Serie A season through the hands of goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

Ten minutes after the break, Roma got back into the match thanks to a goal from Sardar Azmoun, but shortly afterwards Bologna restored the advantageous two-goal margin. This time the assist came from Zirkzee, who sent Saelemaekers into the depth with a nice through ball. The latter finished in a cool manner: 1-3.

For the Romans, Rick Karsdorp came within the lines in the second half, while Sam Beukema completed the ninety minutes on the other side.
