David Neres made an important contribution to Benfica’s victory over FC Vizela on Friday evening. The Brazilian was fifteen minutes before the end with a nice long shot good for the 1-1 in Lisbon. For a long time it also seemed to be the final score, until João Mário shot in the 2-1 from eleven meters in the eleventh minute of extra time. Benfica, with substitute Fredrik Aursnes, ended the game with nine men, after red cards for the same João Mário and Gonçalo Ramos in the final phase.

The visitors, who started the game as number eleven of the Primeira Liga, came from a razor-sharp counter to 0-1. After twenty minutes, Milutin Osmajic went for goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from his own half, after which he managed to outwit the Greek via the inside of the post. Neres’ equalizer came only fifteen minutes before the end: he tried twice to cut out an opponent, and then curled the ball in from just under twenty meters with the left: 1-1.

It looked like it would stay that way for coach Roger Schmidt’s team, especially when he had to continue with ten men because Ramos received his second yellow card for a schwalbe at the start of injury time. However, Benfica did not give up and was awarded a penalty just before time after a handball from Diego Rosa. João Mário took advantage of the opportunity in the 102nd minute, after which he took off his shirt and received his second yellow card. Nevertheless, Benfica did win, which means that it is still at the top of the Primeira Liga with fifteen points from five matches.
