Thomas Tuchel will leave Bayern Munich next summer, so the German top club will have to look for a successor in the coming months. Xabi Alonso, the current trainer of Bayer Leverkusen, is in good shape, but Bayern is also looking for alternatives in case Alonso declines for the position.

According to Sky Sports-journalist Florian Plettenberg, the 42-year-old Spaniard is the main candidate to become head coach of Bayern next season. However, it cannot be completely ruled out that Alonso will opt for a longer employment contract with Leverkusen. He is on course for the title and can enter the Champions League with his successful formation next season.

If Alonso's arrival ultimately proves to be unfeasible, Bayern will move on. It was previously reported that Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi is a top candidate to start working in Munich after the summer, but a striking name has now been added.

Some doubts have arisen about De Zerbi. The board of directors Der Rekordmeister finds it a major disadvantage that the Italian coach does not speak German. De Zerbi is also said to speak limited English, which has created more doubts.

Ralf Rangnick is now by the German Kicker named as Xabi Alonso's main alternative. The current Austrian national coach was already named at Bayern in 2019, after Niko Kovac had to leave the field. Then Hansi Flick was appointed as successor.

The now 65-year-old Rangnick is doing well in Munich and reportedly has a very close relationship with Christoph Freund, sporting director at Bayern. The two know each other from their time at Salzburg and have a lot of respect for each other, the letter said Kicker. It is still unclear whether Rangnick will be available for the position in Munich after this summer's European Championship.

Rangnick previously coached RB Leipzig, among others, and was also interim coach at Manchester United for 29 games in the 2021/22 season. After this he started working as national coach of Austria, with which he qualified for the European Championship. Austria is one of the Dutch opponents in group D of the European Championship this summer.
