The legal dispute between Barcelona and Neymar has finally come to an end, the Catalan club released in a statement on Monday afternoon. Both parties reached an agreement outside the courtroom, which means that no further lawsuits have been filed. According to the Barcelona leadership, it concerned three claims from Neymar and a civil suit. The star player of Paris Saint-Germain has always claimed that he still had tens of millions in credit from his former employer.

Neymar believed he was still entitled to 43.65 million euros in signing money, an amount that was agreed when he extended his contract at the Camp Nou in 2016 until mid-2021, with the option of an extra season. A year later, however, the Brazilian attacker left for PSG for a record amount of 222 million euros. Because Neymar only served a small part of the contract, the club refused to pay. Barcelona in turn demanded 22 million euros from Neymar for breach of contract. The judge partly went along with the Catalans’ reading and sentenced the attacker in June 2020 to a payment of 6.7 million.

Neymar’s lawyers appealed that ruling in November 2020. radio station Cadena SER reported at the time that Neymar was still betting on a payment of 43.65 million euros and also wanted to receive the interest on that amount. In total, it involved almost sixty million euros. In the meantime, Barcelona and Neymar also became embroiled in another legal battle. An investigation by the Spanish tax authorities revealed that in the past Barcelona withheld less tax from the attacker than was usual and therefore paid out more salary. Barcelona therefore wanted to recover a total amount of 10.2 million euros through a lawsuit.

Neymar signed a new mega contract with PSG in May until the summer of 2025, with an annual salary of more than 35 million euros. That equates to a weekly income of approximately EUR 700,000 per week. The now 29-year-old attacker has been linked more than once with a return to Barcelona in the past twelve months, but partly due to the financial situation, a deal with the Spanish superpower never got off the ground.
