Barcelona is not worried about the rumors about Gavi and Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano. Sport reported on Thursday that the Blues would be willing to include the surrender clause in the contract still running until mid-2023. At the same time, Barcelona are in the process of extending the 17-year-old midfielder’s contract and are optimistic about the progress of the negotiations.

A five-year contract is currently on the table for Gavi, with whom negotiations are still ongoing. Romano says that negotiations between Gavi and Barcelona have progressed in recent weeks, requiring him to sign a new contract soon. For that reason, Barcelona are not concerned about reports that Chelsea may be interested and plan to act quickly.

Gavi has a €50million surrender clause in his contract with Barcelona for the time being and Chelsea are willing to put this amount on the table. As long as Gavi has not yet signed his new contract, clubs can pick him up relatively easily in Barcelona. If Barcelona manage to get him to sign a new contract – one of chairman Joan Laporta’s priorities – this danger seems to have passed, as Gavi should be given a similar surrender clause to Ansu Fati and Pedri. Since their contract extension, they have a limited transfer fee of one billion euros.

Barcelona picked up Gavi in 2015 in the Real Betis youth academy. Since he arrived in Catalonia at the age of eleven, he has developed rapidly. Gavi has broken through in the first team this season and has fourteen games to his name so far. In October, Gavi made his debut in the Spanish national team, where he was the starting player for the last four international matches.
