Nico González’s future lies with Barcelona for years to come. The Spanish top club announced on Wednesday evening that the nineteen-year-old midfielder has signed a new contract for three seasons. The commitment includes a transfer clause of half a billion euros, mandatory in Spain. Nico González is the son of Fran González, who caused a furore for Deportivo la Coruña in the eighties and nineties.

Barcelona sees a future in González, who fluctuated between the bench and the base at Barcelona B at the start of the season, but has conquered a starting place as a defensive midfielder in recent months. He is seen internally as the possible successor to Sergio Busquets, who will turn 33 in the summer and still has a contract for two seasons. Trainer Ronald Koeman is positive about the development of the midfielder, according to Catalan media, but that has not yet led to a training session at the A-selection.

Father Fran González was part of the famous in the nineties Superdepor and enjoyed interest from Real Madrid and the Barcelona of Johan Cruijff at the time. The club from La Coruña, however, refused to sell the playmaker and at the time asked for a top prize of no less than two billion pesetas, converted a sloppy 25 million euros. González, good for sixteen A-caps, eventually played exclusively for his childhood sweetheart, won a national title, twice the Copa del Rey and three times the Spanish Super Cup.

Nico González, who has his interests represented by Pere Guardiola (the brother of Pep Guardiola, ed.), Will experience the preparation of Barcelona for the new season this summer and the intention is that he will be part of the A- selection, if its development continues to meet expectations. Ansu Fati, Ilaix Moriba and Pedri are other teenage talents in the A-selection.
