Axel Witsel has signed his contract with Atlético Madrid. The Belgian has signed a one-year contract. The transfer had been in the air for some time as Witsel enjoyed a transfer-free status and is also charmed by Diego Simeone’s playing style. On Wednesday afternoon, the Madrid club confirmed the transfer.

Witsel is the first real reinforcement for Simeone this season. Atlético already said goodbye to several players with experience this summer. Héctor Herrera (Houston Dynamo) and Sime Vrsaljko (Olympiakos) left on a free transfer. Luis Suarez has also left the club on a free transfer. It is not yet known where the Uruguayan goalkeeper thief will start. River Plate from his native country is frequently mentioned.

Atlético says on the club website that they are very satisfied with the arrival of Witsel and especially explain his experience. “In this way we assure ourselves of a player with a huge amount of experience. During his career, Witsel has played more than 600 appearances for various clubs, including 77 in the Champions League and 42 in the Europa League. In addition, he participated in four major final tournaments with his country Belgium.”

Witsel is an ideal asset for Simeone because of his deployability in midfield and possibly in defense. The 124-time Belgian international has made 144 appearances in the past four seasons for Borussia Dortmund, which collected him from China in 2018 for twenty million euros. In the two years before that, Witsel had earned an exceptional salary from TJ Quanjian. It will be his sixth professional club for the controller, having previously also served Zenit Saint Petersburg, Benfica and Standard Liège.
