In addition to Noussair Mazraoui, Ajax has also made an improved contract proposal to Lisandro Martínez, Marc Overmars announced in conversation with the General Newspaper. The team from Amsterdam want to reward Martínez for his excellent development over the past two seasons. Mazraoui has been in doubt about a new contract for some time, but Overmars is hopeful to be able to smooth the issue.

Martínez had a difficult start to the season, but played in the base at Ajax from the beginning of January and won the double with the club. After that, the 23-year-old defender left for the Copa América with Argentina. He won the tournament together with teammate Nicolás Tagliafico, although Martínez only played one game. This week he reported to Ajax in Austria to prepare for the new season.

“We offered him a new contract two months ago,” Overmars reveals. “He still has a two-year contract with an option for another year, but we think an upgrade and extension are in order. There have been several talks, after which his football summer started. He has been back since this week, so we will pick it up again. The proposal is with them.”

With Mazraoui, more haste is required. The 23-year-old right-wing defender has only been in Amsterdam for one more season. “We really want him to stay, to be fit and to be able to play a lot,” said Overmars. “Then he has what it takes to grow to the level of players such as Daley Blind and Dusan Tadic. There is no doubt in terms of sport, but financially it is still an issue.”
