Newcastle United did what they had to do in the battle for a Champions League ticket on Thursday evening. Eddie Howe’s team won 1-4 on a visit to Everton, which is in danger of relegation. The win keeps Newcastle in third place in the Premier League. At the same time, AFC Bournemouth won 0-1 with a goal from Marcus Tavernier against Southampton.

Everton-Newcastle United 1-4
Newcastle, where Sven Botman was again in the starting line-up and former Eredivisionist Alexander Isak had to settle for a place on the bench, had a hard time in the first half. Everton were more menacing, creating danger through shots from Idrissa Gueye and Dwight McNeil, but Nick Pope saved the game. After half an hour it was hit on the other side of the field: Joelinton’s shot was blocked by Jordan Pickford, but Wilson tapped into the 0-1 from the rebound. Just before half-time, Everton seemed to equalize through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but he turned out to be narrowly offside.

Everton was also dangerous a few times in the second half, especially via Calvert-Lewin. Again, however, it was Newcastle that scored: a few minutes after Joe Willock’s volley was stylishly saved by Pickford, the same midfielder put the ball from the back line on the head of Joelinton, who headed in. The visitors got the hang of it and made it 0-3 in the 75th minute through Wilson, who curled the ball beautifully into the top corner from seventeen yards. Via Steven McNeil, whose corner flew in at once, it became 1-3, but a minute later Jacob Murphy made the final decision. After fantastic preparatory work by substitute Isak, he tapped the ball in for an open goal: 1-4.

Southampton v AFC Bournemouth 0-1
Both teams came close to scoring the opening goal in the first half. Adam Armstrong hit the post on behalf of Southampton, a few minutes later Bournemouth back Matías Viña’s goal was disallowed for offside. Shortly after the break, the score was opened, when Tavernier cut in and shot through a forest of legs: 0-1. Just before time, Southampton seemed to save a point through Ché Adams, but his goal was rejected due to offside. Bournemouth climbs to fourteenth place with the victory, Southampton remains last.
