Latest update:

Ajax has taken the decision not to appoint an interim general manager until the Special General Meeting of Shareholders (EGM) on May 21. Journalist Mike Verweij reports this The Telegraph Friday afternoon. The tasks of the suspended Alex Kroes will be taken over for the time being by members of the current management: Marijn Beuker, Menno Geelen and Susan Lenderink.

According to Verweij, Ajax informed the staff about the decision taken in a letter on Friday. The Amsterdammers write that Beuker, Geelen and Lenderink will take over Kroes' tasks until May 21 and thus 'go the extra mile'. The decision on what will happen to Kroes will be made at the EGM next month.

The board wants Kroes, who is suspected of insider trading in Ajax shares, to be taken into custody. “The Ajax association, which accounts for 73 percent of the shares, wants a return of Kroes 'in any form and under any conditions',” Verweij writes in his article. The journalist also has more information.

“If the Supervisory Board nevertheless decides on May 21 that Kroes' departure is inevitable, an interim CEO will be appointed,” says Verweij. “That is a requirement of the KNVB, which stated that the club must have an (interim) CEO within sixty days.”

Michael van Praag, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ajax, countered Ajax Life indicates that he believes that there is no way back for Kroes. “Alex was able to explain how he sees it, but the conclusion – no matter how painful – remained the same: you cannot maintain a general manager who carries this with him”

At the beginning of this month, Ajax announced that Kroes, who had been employed as the brand new general manager in Amsterdam since March 15, had been suspended due to purchasing shares in the club. The decision to suspend Kroes was taken after the Supervisory Board of Ajax learned that the newly appointed director had purchased more than 17,000 shares in Ajax a week before the publication of his intended appointment on August 2, 2023.

The Supervisory Board of Ajax has sought external legal advice, which showed that it is very likely that he has committed insider trading. Insider trading is a criminal offence. Kroes himself still hopes to return as general manager of Ajax.
