Ajax is open to a departure from Edson Álvarez this summer, confirm The Telegraph and Football International† Under Erik ten Hag, the Mexican was still an important pivot in the starting eleven of the team from Amsterdam, but fits less seamlessly into the plans of his successor Alfred Schreuder. Álvarez enjoys frequent interest from England and Germany – only he can’t leave for an apple and an egg.

Álvarez made the switch from América to Ajax in July 2019, which paid him fifteen million euros at the time. The 55-time international was seen as the successor of central defender Matthijs de Ligt, who had left for Juventus. However, Álvarez could not break any pots in the back and Ten Hag usually preferred a center of Joël Veltman and Daley Blind in his debut season. The new Manchester United manager began to use Álvarez mainly as a defensive midfielder; his favorite position, he said.

In his new role, Álvarez became a regular name on the starting form for the team from Amsterdam. Last season, Stade Rennes tried to free the 24-year-old from the capital for twenty million, but then technical director Marc Overmars did not give an inch. Not much later, Ajax broke Álvarez’s contract with one year, until mid-2025. Taken together, the current technical duo Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar valued the Mexican at thirty million euros.

RB Leipzig is reportedly emphatically in the market for Álvarez. Those Roten Bullen however, regard the possible transfer due to financial considerations as separate from the negotiations about Brian Brobbey, who has to go the opposite way. Interest in Àlvarez from the Premier League is also increasing. According to BILD Ajax would have Ilia Gruev in sight as a possible successor. The defensive midfielder impressed last season at Werder Bremen, which was promoted to the Bundesliga.
