Teun Koopmeiners, like Frenkie de Jong, must miss the European Championship due to an injury, the KNVB confirmed in a press release. The 26-year-old Atalanta midfielder was injured in the warm-up of the home game against Iceland (4-0) and therefore did not recover in time to play in Germany. It is not yet known whether Koeman will call up a replacement for Koopmeiners, which means that the Dutch team's European Championship selection – including Ian Maatsen – currently consists of 25 players.

Koopmeiners suddenly grabbed his thigh during the warm-up of the match against Iceland. Koeman therefore had to switch quickly and appointed Jerdy Schouten as his replacement in the starting line-up. Immediately after the game, the national coach said that he was not positive about the physical condition of Koopmeiners.

“The first ball he finishes, it hits his groin,” Koeman said NOS. “We don't know yet what the situation is like for Koopmeiners. We will see that early tomorrow morning in the test results. But I have bad suspicions.”

The national coach sees another midfielder drop out after De Jong. Koeman has not yet called up a replacement for Koopmeiners. Maatsen joined the group after the departure of De Jong.

Van Dijk's response

Captain Virgil van Dijk also reacted disappointed after Monday evening's game to the retirement of Koopmeiners and De Jong. “That is of course a shame, especially for them,” the Liverpool defender said in front of the camera ESPN.

“But of course it's also for us. It's something we're disappointed about, but hey, we have to move on and that's what we're going to do. We showed something today, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a shame.”
