AA Gent has responded with a statement to various incidents that have taken place around the club in recent weeks. Attacker Ilombe Mboyo was arrested after a violent incident with his own partner and sports adviser Gunther Schepens caused a traffic accident while drunk. Mboyo has been told he will no longer be playing this season. A final warning applies to Schepens.

Mboyo spent a night in jail after he was arrested in Ixelles from 15 to 16 January for violence against his own wife. Ghent waited a long time with a statement, until today. “The club wants to make it clear that it cannot and will not accept violence against women under any circumstances and that clear actions have been taken and guidelines given within the club. Because the Mboyo case is also a personal matter, we cannot communicate the content publicly. In any case, in a subsequent incident, any person involved in the club who misbehaves in that area will be disbarred.”

The last news reports that Mboyo will no longer be in action this season. He can continue to train. Trainer Hein Vanhaezebrouck hinted that Mboyo was not part of the match selection in recent weeks for sporting reasons, but internally it has been decided not to include him in the selection. Partly at the insistence of main sponsor VDK Bank. It was not the first time that Mboyo was discredited because of a violent incident with a woman. In his youth he was a member of a Brussels youth gang. In 2004, he was given a seven-year suspended prison sentence for gang rape of a 14-year-old girl.

Schepens also embarrassed Ghent. The sports advisor recently hit several cars while intoxicated. “The club strongly disapproves of this behavior. Gunther has been told that if this happens again, it will be impossible to continue the cooperation,” the statement reads. The former Belgian international hit three parked cars, a fourth was pushed against a facade of a house. His driver’s license was revoked for 15 days. Not long ago, the former football player was banned from driving because he was drunk behind the wheel. Schepens was then given an alcohol interlock.
