The Netherlands has also done excellent business in the coefficient ranking in the second European round. The Netherlands came close to a gold score, but Vitesse eventually lost at home against Stade Rennes. Ajax, PSV, AZ and Feyenoord did win their match. This means that the Netherlands, the best-scoring country of all this season, is again catching up with the mediocre performing Portugal. France did slightly better, but saw the Netherlands come a little closer.

The Netherlands adds 0.4 points per victory, making the four victories a total of 1.6 points. For competitor Portugal, each victory yields 0.333 points. The Southern Europeans saw Sporting Portugal and FC Porto lose, but Benfica and Sporting Braga did win their game: a total of 0.666 points for the Portuguese. France, another long-term competitor, added a total of 1,499 points thanks to the wins of Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique Lyon, Stade Rennes and Olympique Marseille, plus AS Monaco’s draw. Lille OSC lost its game and therefore made no contribution for the French.

The coefficient ranking as of 30-09-2021

COUNTRY CURRENT SCORE SCORE AS OF 01/07/’22 ACTIVE TEAMS
5. France 46.415 (+1.333) 34,915 6/6

7. Netherlands 36,500 (+1,600) 33,600 5/5
8. Austria 32.650 (+0.600) 22,300 4/5
9. Russia 31,682 (+0.800) 19,082 3/5
10. Scotland 31,300 (+0) 27,300 2/5
11. Ukraine 30,600 (+0,200) 22,600 3/5
12. Serbia 28.875 (+1,000) 21,500 2/4
13. Belgium 28,000 (+0.800) 25,400 4/5

In the coefficient ranking, the Netherlands is making up a race that could become successful in the long term. The gap to Portugal and France is currently huge, which means that the Netherlands will finish in seventh place this season. After this season, however, the score from 2017/18 will disappear and for the Netherlands that means the loss of a dramatic score, which will immediately take the country a huge step forward towards the two competitors.

As mentioned, the Netherlands should mainly look at the long term. As soon as the score from the 17/18 season disappears on July 1, 2022, the Netherlands will take a step forward. In this round alone, the go to Portugal has been reduced by almost a full point: the gap from 1 July 2022 is now 1.9 points to the Portuguese and only 1.3 to France. That is important, because countries in the top 6 of the ranking provide two participants for the group stage of the Champions League. In seventh place, the Netherlands now has only one regular participant in that group stage.
