Interim-bondscoach Dwight Lodeweges announced a preliminary National Team-selection of 38 players for the practice game against Mexico and the Nations League-doubles with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy. Compared to the last selection of the end of August, Steven Berghuis, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Donyell Malen, Pablo Rosario, Javairô Dilrosun and Davy Klaassen were added. The final selection will be announced on 2 October.

Especially the name of Klaassen in the pre-selection is striking. Werder Bremen’s midfielder got out of the picture after his transfer from Ajax to Everton. In England he ended up on a side-track, after which he managed to breathe new life into his career with Werder Bremen. Dilrosun made his debut under the departed national coach Ronald Koeman and is again in the picture, just like Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Pablo Rosario made his debut under Koeman and then suffered a relapse. Under trainer Roger Schmidt he raised the line, resulting in a spot in the pre-selection. Donyell Malen has fully recovered from a severe knee injury and may be able to rejoin the Dutch national team. Daley Blind and Steven Berghuis were absent in the previous international period due to physical complaints. Both players have recovered and have a chance of a place in the final selection.

The preselection consists of the following 38 players:

Keepers: Jasper Cillessen (Valencia), Marco Bizot (AZ), Tim Krul (Norwich City), Jeroen Zoet (Spezia)

Defense: Nathan Aké (Manchester City), Daley Blind (Ajax), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), Denzel Dumfries (PSV), Timothy Fosu-Mensah (Manchester United), Perr Schuurs (Ajax), Hans Hateboer (Atalanta), Kenny Tete (Fulham), Joël Veltman (Brighton &amp); Hove Albion), Stefan de Vrij (Internazionale), Owen Wijndal (AZ).
