FC Zurich is cheered on by just a handful of supporters in the Philips Stadium on Thursday evening. The 1,700 accompanying fans of the Swiss club refused to enter the PSV stadium after various incidents in the center of Eindhoven. “Rarely seen something like this”, reacts the surprised Rik Elfrink of the Eindhovens Dagblad on Twitter.

At the end of the afternoon, the hard core of FC Zurich clashed with the police on the Markt in Eindhoven. Images show that men who wear black clothing with the Zurich logo on it, among other things, use terrace chairs and bicycles as a weapon against the riot police. There is also the sound of fireworks being set off. The riot police acted cautiously, because melee weapons had been spotted among the Swiss football supporters.

It seems that the Zurich fans were out for a confrontation with PSV supporters. The riot police prevented this, after which the anger from the Swiss camp turned to the police. The riot police managed to direct the group to the Philips Stadium around 6.30 pm. There, to the surprise of the police, the supporters refused to enter. “A lot of police and hassle, traveling 1,700 kilometers to view the outside of a stadium,” Elfrink responds.

Frans van de Waardeburg of pub Publiek op de Markt has closed its doors, just like the rest of the catering industry on the square in the center of the city. “And we will no longer open tonight, we have decided together,” says Van de Waardeburg opposite the Eindhovens Dagblad. He has heard from staff that the fire broke out when one of the supporters was taken away by the police.
