Mathias Zanka Jörgensen has found a new club a week after he left Fenerbahçe. The 31-year-old center defender’s contract with the Turkish top club was terminated, allowing him to look for a new club transfer-free. Zanka has eventually found shelter with Brentford who have been promoted to the Premier League.

Zanka landed at Fenerbahçe two years ago, but his period in Turkey was not a great success. The 35-time Danish international played a total of 21 games for the Turkish top club and spent a year and a half elsewhere, on a rental basis at Fortuna Düsseldorf and FC Copenhagen. Earlier this summer, Zanka was linked to Antwerp, but he is now returning to the Premier League where he previously played 62 games for Huddersfield Town.

Brentford has now announced through official channels that Zanka – who wore the PSV shirt between 2012 and 2014 – has signed a one-year contract, with an option for another season. “Zanka brings a wealth of experience across different competitions,” Danish manager Thomas Frank told Brentford’s website. “The experience and his leadership are important, so it’s good to have him around.”

Zanka joins a true Danish enclave, as Mads Bech Sørensen (who is injured and for whom Zanka has been brought in as a backup), Mads Rasmussen, Luka Racic, Christian Nørgaard, Mathias Jensen and Mads Bistrup also play for Brentford. The Bees took five points in the first three Premier League games to occupy tenth place in the league table.
