Marco van Basten does not have a good word for the technical leadership at Ajax. The former top striker and current analyst of Ziggo Sports saw that the team from Amsterdam played against Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday evening with two of the nine summer purchases. Ajax was dried off (1-6) and according to Van Basten that is due to the choices on the transfer market.

Lisandro Martínez and Antony left Ajax and yielded the Amsterdam club about 150 million euros. According to Van Basten, far too little has been done with it. “You brought in Bergwijn and that Bassey, but the rest of all purchases are not prepared at all,” the former attacker notes in the studio at Ziggo Sports. “So what’s your buying policy? The money has to be on the field, right? These were just weird, crazy purchases. If you don’t draft them, don’t buy them.”

Presenter Wytse van der Goot then stated that the position of Ajax with the current material was not so crazy. Van Basten could not agree with that, because Bergwijn and Bassey were the only two purchases that were in the base. “If you spend a hundred million and two of the nine players that have been reached are involved, isn’t that crazy? You can assume that you will then draft five or six? This is not logical.”

Due to the defeat against Napoli, Ajax needs a small miracle to continue in the Champions League. The last three games must all be won and even then the results on other fields could throw a spanner in the works. A visit to Rangers on the last day of play should in any case be enough for a sequel in the Europa League. Napoli is now the leader with nine points from three games and Liverpool follows with six from three. Ajax has three points and Rangers have not yet achieved a result.
