Xavi Simons will play at PSV this season with shirt number 7, the Dutch top club announced. The midfielder, who was taken over from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, thus takes over the number from Eran Zahavi, who left this summer. Walter Benítez receives number 1, while Luuk de Jong can wear his trusted number 9 on his back.

Benítez’s jersey number (transferred from OGC Nice) has not been used for two years, because Joël Drommel (16) and Yvon Mvogo (38) have different preferences in that area. The last PSV keeper to play with number 1 was Jeroen Zoet. Boy Waterman (picked up at OFI Crete) will play with number 24.

Jersey number 2 is also taken back by PSV after years of absence, in this case by Ki-Jana Hoever. The number had been vacant in Eindhoven since Nicolas Isimat-Mirin left in 2019. Guus Til, who was surprisingly brought in by PSV at Spartak Moscow, has been assigned jersey number 20. The attacking midfielder played with 26 at Feyenoord last season and once wore 10 at AZ. However, that last jersey number is not free, because it has been occupied by Noni Madueke since last year.

For Carlos Vinícius, the distribution of numbers is a writing on the wall. The striker hired from Benfica has to hand over his beloved number 9 to De Jong, who came over from Seville. Incidentally, the numbers are ‘provisionally’ set by PSV. In case of transfers, changes could still take place.
