Wouter Burger is going to leave Feyenoord. The twenty-year-old midfielder annex defender is on his way to FC Basel, reports RTV Rijnmond. According to the regional broadcaster, he prefers a transfer to the Swiss top club over a transfer within the Eredivisie. Feyenoord reached an agreement with Sparta Rotterdam about Burger on Monday.

The transfer from Burger to Basel does not come out of the blue. Feyenoord Transfermarkt already announced at the end of June that the Swiss were interested. According to reports, the bet was on a transfer of at least one million euros. A month later, a transfer seemed to stall because the negotiations had broken down. After new talks, the parties involved seem to have reached an agreement and Burger is on his way to Switzerland.

The midfielder made the switch from Excelsior’s youth academy to Feyenoord in the summer of 2013. It did not come to a major breakthrough in De Kuip. In the second half of the 2019/20 season, he was loaned out to Excelsior, while last season he played on a rental basis for Sparta Rotterdam. Under coach Henk Fraser he made nineteen Eredivisie appearances and scored two goals. Feyenoord already saw a player leave for Switzerland with Jordy Wehrmann. After a rental period of a few months, the midfielder definitely switched to FC Lucerne.
