Latest update:

FC Twente secured the services of Myron Boadu on Deadline Day, but it could easily have been that Wout Weghorst had become FC Twente's new striker. Arnold Bruggink, technical director at Enschede, explains The East Stand by RTV East that he made a call to the Burnley-owned striker, but that his arrival proved 'unfeasible in the short term'.

As a guest on the talk show, Bruggink explains how Boadu's transfer came about.
“The story was that Manfred Ugalde left (to Spartak Moscow, ed.). We could see what would happen, because we just had to find a replacement in a short time. Then you know that it will either be very expensive, or that you will have to rent a player.”

Ugalde's departure was a 'pain in the stomach', says Bruggink. “I thought: 'Manfred, please stay with us until the summer'. Then you stay in Europe after the summer and start earning your money. Now he is really out of the picture.”

“We spoke to Myron on Sunday morning, he was super enthusiastic,” Bruggink continues. “But then you still have to reach an agreement with the club (AS Monaco, ed.) and there were options on the table that were much more attractive to them. Then you end up in a split.”

“At first we thought it would work out, then we thought it was hopeless. We dared to wait a long time for Myron.” But in the end, FC Twente's patience was rewarded. Boadu reportedly compromised a lot and made significant concessions. This is how FC Twente was able to realize his arrival.

But he wasn't the only option. There were two others, Bruggink reveals. One of these was Weghorst. “We aimed high,” admits the new technical director. “At this time (so close to the window deadline, ed.) He was unfeasible.” That answer quickly raises the question of whether Weghorst's arrival in the summer is realistic, when the loaned Boadu returns to Monaco.

“I don't know,” Bruggink answers. “He is still under contract with Burnley. But I'm not going to make it a secret that we would like him. We want someone who wants to play for the club. Well, then you have one. It would be stupid if you were not to call such a player – who has indicated that he would like to play football at FC Twente.”

“I asked him,” Bruggink continues. The former footballer does not want to reveal what Weghorst answered. But it is not yet a done deal that Weghorst will move to the Grolsch Veste in the summer, the former analyst emphasizes.

The other name that was doing the rounds in Enschede in the final days of the transfer window was Milan Smit. Smit, who has already scored fifteen goals in competition with SC Cambuur, has been 'seriously in the spotlight' with the Tukkers this season.
