VfL Wolfsburg has managed to find its way up again since the departure of Mark van Bommel. Under the new trainer Florian Kohfeldt there has been no loss for the time being: three wins and a draw. Wout Weghorst thinks that Kohfeldt suits Wolfsburg better than Van Bommel, the striker tells in conversation with BILD.

Lothar Matthäus wrote in his column last month for Sky Deutschland that the bad relationship with Weghorst led to Van Bommel’s resignation. Weghorst initially had a base place under Van Bommel, but lost it for the 2-0 lost away game against 1.FC Union Berlin. After that, the striker was missing for the time being due to a corona infection. “It is quite surprising, given that Van Bommel and Weghorst are compatriots. They should have a good connection and be able to communicate well through the language. But that was clearly not the case.”

Under Kohfeldt, Weghorst has returned to his starting position and on Saturday he scored his first goal since mid-September in the game against Arminia Bielefeld (2-2). Weghorst admits afterwards that with his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season, a burden was lifted off his shoulders. The 29-year-old striker was BILD also asked about the difference at Wolfsburg since the appointment of Kohfeldt as successor to Van Bommel, who received his conge after seven games in a row had not been won.

“It’s very different with the new coach. Because of the way he is and thinks about football. I think we are doing very well as a team, it fits together very well”, Weghorst says. Since the appointment of Kohfeldt, Wolfsburg successively defeated Bayer Leverkusen (0-2), Red Bull Salzburg (2-1) and FC Augsburg (1-0). Against Arminia Bielefeld, points were lost for the first time this weekend, now occupying sixth place in the Bundesliga.

“Every trainer has his own qualities, his own thoughts and his own passion. Van Bommel and Wolfsburg did not fit together,” says Weghorst. The striker belonged to the the Dutch squad in the past international period, but did not get to play in the games against Montenegro (2-2) and Norway (2-0 win). “I was only allowed to warm up twice, but it’s always about what’s best for the team. Van Gaal is clear about what he expects of me and says I should be there if he needs me.”
