Marco Reus may have to put an end to a final tournament again. The 33-year-old Borussia Dortmund captain ran in the first half of the Kohlenpottderby against Schalke 04 suffered an apparently serious ankle injury. Reus had to leave the field crying on a stretcher and was replaced by Marco Reyna.

Reus was injured after a duel with Schalke defender Florian Flick, who cleared the ball, after which Reus went through his ankle annoyingly when putting his foot down. The midfielder was then visibly shaken with tears in his eyes carried off the field by brand card. Reus received a standing ovation from Dortmund fans and saw his 250th Bundesliga game come to a disappointing end early.

With the World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, disaster seems to strike again for Reus. Just before the European Championship 2012 and European Championship 2016, he was injured during goodbye matches from the Mannschaft, while he also had to miss the 2014 World Cup due to injuries. At last year’s European Championship he did not make an appearance due to fatigue. National coach Hansi Flick did include Reus this week in the selection of Germany for the Nations League matches with Hungary (September 23) and England (September 26).
