Thomas Tuchel has not shown his best side in Germany. Before last Saturday’s match against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-2 win), the Bayern Munich coach spoke very negatively about his club’s transfer policy. According to German media, Tuchel is playing with fire. Last year, similar statements led to his resignation from Chelsea.

Prior to the 1-2 win against Gladbach, Tuchel spoke to the press. In an interview with Sky Deutschland he indicated that he completely disagreed with the club’s transfer policy. “The selection is much too thin, especially in the back,” said Tuchel. “We have six defenders in the selection, while we play with four in the back.” Lucas Hernández (PSG) and Benjamin Pavard (Internazionale), among others, left Munich this summer.

Tuchel had been nagging for a week for another defensive quality boost. In the end, deals with Trevoh Chalobah, João Cancelo and Armel Bella-Kotchap, who ultimately chose PSV, all fell through, preventing Tuchel from getting his desired reinforcement. The fact that the trainer continues to complain after the market has closed, while nothing can be changed about the situation, is viewed very critically internally. For the club management, it feels like Tuchel is already protecting himself against possible sporting setbacks, while he still has a million-dollar selection.

Tuchel’s behavior during the transfer window has already been described as “erratic” at Bayern Munich. The German was actively involved in the incoming transfers and this led to many discussions within the club. According to Sports Picture the most recent statements have led to ‘complete incomprehension’ among Bayern club executives. Last year, during his time at Chelsea, Tuchel behaved exactly the same. This, in combination with the poor results that were achieved, led to his dismissal at the time.
