Arsenal have made a good recovery from the blow against Liverpool in the Premier League. Exactly a week after the 4-0 beating at Anfield, manager Mikel Arteta’s team was 2-0 too strong for Newcastle United at home. The goals from Bukayo Saka and substitute Gabriel Martinelli came in the second half. A miss by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang just minutes before the break went viral on social media. In the second half, Arsenal still put things in order.

The first half at the Emirates Stadium ended goalless, but the teams of Arteta and the finally debuting Eddie Howe, who had been struck down by the corona virus, had the prospect of an opening goal. After half an hour of play, it was thanks to Aaron Ramsdale that Jonjo Shelvey didn’t throw the game off balance. The shot from the edge of the box appeared to end in the top corner, but the Arsenal goalkeeper made a superb save.

A sloppy ten minutes later, Newcastle, who defended solidly and were dangerous in the counter, just got away. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka pushed a header from Emile Smith Rowe to the side from close range, after which Aubameyang seemed to shoot the ball into the goal. However, from a few meters, and to his great surprise, the attacker shot the ball against the outside of the right post.

Arsenal took the lead after less than an hour of play. After a good run on the left side of the penalty area, Saka received a lovely pass from Nuno Tavares and shot the ball low and diagonally past Dubravka: 1-0. The Londoners have opened the scoring in each of their last 17 Premier League games with Newcastle: it is the longest current run of a club against a specific opponent in the history of the competition.

Ten minutes later, Martinelli’s first contact with the ball, who replaced the slightly injured Saka, also immediately made it 2-0: after a lovely ball from Takehiro Tomiyasu from the right, the well-run Brazilian worked the ball over the goalkeeper in one go. He was in the field for a total of 93 seconds. Ramsdale and Dubravka were put to work a few more times in the remaining twenty minutes, but the scoreboard stopped moving. Arsenal are in fifth place with 23 points, while Newcastle remain last and are still waiting for their first win after thirteen days of play.
