For Liverpool, winner of the FA Cup and EFL Cup, last season ended in a minor way. The Reds grabbed next to the English title and in the final of the Champions League, Real Madrid proved too strong with 0-1. Public favorite Mohamed Salah extended his contract until mid-2025, while new signings Darwin Núñez and Fábio Carvalho impressed during the preparation.

Manchester City seemed to lose the league title last season on the final day. A 0-2 deficit against Aston Villa, however, was wiped out in no time and the 3-2 victory was enough for a big championship celebration at the Etihad Stadium. For Manchester City it was already the sixth championship in ten years, and the fourth league title since the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola in mid-2016. To be able to stay ahead of Liverpool again, Erling Braut Haaland was bought from Borussia Dortmund for 60 million euros. In addition, the midfield was strengthened with Kalvin Phillips, who grew into a full international of England at Leeds United.

Both clubs have strengthened themselves with a new attack leader during the summer transfer window. Both Núñez (Benfica) and Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) scored continuously last season. Núñez showed himself with four hits during the 5-0 exhibition win over RB Leipzig, while Haaland on behalf of the Citizens took the only goal against Bayern Munich (0-1).
