Less than three full days after the Europa League duels of PSV and Ajax, the next top match for the two strongest clubs in the Netherlands is already on the program. A Super Sunday with two beautiful posters, the first of which is the meeting between PSV and Ajax in Eindhoven. The situation at both clubs is like day and night. Has Ajax not lingered in the festivities for too long after the qualification for the next round, and can PSV straighten its back after the painful elimination in the Europa League? Together with TOTO, look ahead to the Eredivisie topper, who may well be decisive in the battle for the championship.

With a victory over PSV, Ajax makes a nine-point gap with the Eindhoven team and the title fight, with even a match credit for the Amsterdam club, seems to be decided. But then the team of trainer Erik ten Hag has to win in the Philips Stadium, something that Ajax has not been able to achieve in competition since 20 March 2016. PSV is unbeaten in the four home matches with Ajax in the Eredivisie afterwards (three victories and one draw) and only faced one goal in this series, during the encounter in the previous season (1-1). Traditionally, Ajax has a hard time visiting PSV in Eindhoven.

It is now common knowledge that PSV has not been able to win a domestic top match for a long time. For this we even have to go back to December 2018. At the time, PSV won at home against AZ (3-1). Since then, the Eindhoven club has not won any of the eleven Eredivisie duels with Ajax, AZ or Feyenoord (four draws and seven defeats). Still, a victory for PSV in a top match does not seem far away, because in January PSV was the team that scored the most attempts (38) in the mutual encounters between the clubs in the top four and fired the most shots on goal ( 16). After that, PSV was the team that received the fewest shots (23) and shots at its own goal (13). Can Ajax arm itself well against that on Sunday?

PSV – Ajax is not only an absolute top match, but also a duel of sharpshooters. PSV players Donyell Malen and Eran Zahavi scored seven and five times in the Eredivisie respectively this calendar year, something that only VVV-Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis did better than the two (twelve goals). On the Ajax side, Sébastien Haller is the Eredivisie top scorer of 2021. He scored just as often in the competition this year as Zahavi (five times). The French Ajax player will in any case start the meeting in Eindhoven rested, because he cannot play in the Europa League due to an error in the registration. On the other hand, Zahavi showed against Olympiacos on Thursday that he is a goal getter pur sang. The Israeli will be the first PSV player with three goals against Ajax in one Eredivisie season since Jeremain Lens in the 2012/13 vintage on Sunday, and the first player to achieve that performance in one season since Lucas Moura in 2018/19. The Brazilian midfielder scored three times for Tottenham Hotspur against Ajax in the semi-final of the Champions League.
