A repeat of the season overture is scheduled for Sunday: Ajax will meet PSV in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. In the previous meeting, on August 7, in the context of the Johan Cruijff Scale, it was still 0-4 for PSV. That was one of the biggest victories ever of the Eindhoven team over the Amsterdam team. Now, however, the world looks a little different. In collaboration with TOTO, we look ahead to the first topper this Eredivisie season.

There is little doubt that Ajax is in excellent form. Apart from the impressive start in the Champions League, Erik ten Hag’s team is doing well in the Eredivisie. Despite the home defeat against FC Utrecht in the eighth round, Ajax is at the top. After nine matches, the reigning champion also only conceded two goals, bringing a record in sight. It happened only three times before that an Eredivisie team only conceded two goals after ten matches: Feyenoord in 1971, PSV in 1977 and Ajax in 1995.

Will Ajax manage to keep the goal clean and equal the Eredivisie record? View the odds for a clean sheet of the Amsterdammers here.

Does PSV have no chance in advance in the Johan Cruijff ArenA? Absolutely not. Looking at the statistics, the Eindhoven team is just as threatening offensively as the Amsterdam team. Where Ajax fired 184 shots this Eredivisie season, PSV fired 183 shots at the enemy goal. That does not differ much, although PSV can still tinker with the accuracy of the shots. All shots only resulted in 22 goals, where Ajax already scored 32 times. PSV will therefore want to return to the effectiveness of August 7, when the scoreboard was eventually 0-4.

Furthermore, the past seems to be a harbinger for a North Brabant victory in Amsterdam. Ajax lost its previous home game in competition and can remain scoreless for the first time since November 2001. Ajax’s second opponent at the time? PSV, which won 1-3.

Finally, for the neutral viewers at least, it is to be hoped that the match will remain exciting for a long time. In the final phase of PSV matches, anything can happen. Roger Schmidt’s team has already scored nine goals in the last fifteen minutes this Eredivisie season. That is in absolute terms the highest number of all teams this season, but also in relative terms. PSV therefore made 41 percent in the last fifteen minutes of a total production of 22 goals. Slowly it seems that Roger Schmidt is right, who frequently rotated his players in the opening phase of the season.
