It increasingly seems that Georginio Wijnaldum is working on his last period at Liverpool. The Athletic reports Tuesday that the talks between club and player about a new agreement at Anfield have reached an impasse. Wijnaldum would reportedly want to join for four seasons, but the club management of the Reds sees no point in such a term of the contract. There is therefore a chance that the Orange International will walk out the door at Liverpool for free next year.

Wijnaldum has been associated with a transfer to Barcelona for some time. However, due to the corona crisis, the Catalan superpower is unable to throw millions in the transfer window. Players will first have to be sold before trainer Ronald Koeman can strengthen his selection. The transfer window will close in two weeks, on October 5, making it increasingly appear that Wijnaldum is finishing the season as a contract player for Liverpool.

According to The Athletic Manager Jürgen Klopp does not feel the need to sell Wijnaldum in the final phase of the transfer period. The Dutchman still has a prominent role in the German trainer’s plans, despite the recent hiring of Thiago Alcántara. Wijnaldum just had a basic place in Liverpool’s away match against Chelsea (0-2) last Sunday.

Wijnaldum has been under contract with Liverpool since mid-2016 and the 29-year-old midfielder has so far played 189 games in the shirt of the English champions. In addition to the national title, the former player of Feyenoord and PSV, among others, conquered the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019.
