Ronald de Boer thinks that Ajax only benefits from the possible arrival of Steven Bergwijn. The former player of the Amsterdam club thinks that the Tottenham Hotspur wing attacker can add something to the game of coach Erik ten Hag’s team. Fellow analyst Jan van Halst, however, has great doubts about a possible winter transfer from the the Dutch international. On Monday, Ajax saw a first offer of eighteen million euros for Bergwijn rejected by the management of Tottenham.

“If you look at Ajax without the Africa Cup, then you have Sébastien Haller, Antony and Dusan Tadic,” Van Halst concluded on Monday in Rondo by Ziggo Sports. The former midfielder of Ajax, among others, does not know whether there is sufficient perspective for Bergwijn, should he actually return to the Netherlands. “Where will he play then? Then he will not play again”, Van Halst referred to the fact that the winger at Tottenham does not have a permanent place.

De Boer takes a different view with regard to Bergwijn. “I think he’s a good player,” said the analyst. “At Tottenham he has ups and downs but he is a boy with potential. Haller is not there (because of the Africa Cup, ed.) and of course they have brought Brian Brobbey, but it remains to be seen whether he will deliver. You still have Tadic as a striker, but there are important weeks to come. Then you have a good player with Bergwijn, who can also play behind or in the striker.”

In De Boer’s view, Bergwijn does not need time to adapt to the circumstances and the game at Ajax. “He’s also a Dutchman, so it’s not like he’s in a completely different setting comes. He knows the area. Bergwijn also grew up at Ajax as a youth player. He knows it there and he probably also has friends walking around.”
