VVV-Venlo and RKC Waalwijk shared the points on Saturday evening after a true spectacle: 3-3. With a goal in the final phase, the team from Venlo seemed to draw the longest straw, but a handball by Giorgos Giakoumakis resulted in a penalty and a point for RKC not much later. The VVV striker signed in the initial phase of the game for his 25th goal of the season after a goal drought of one and a half months. Due to the division of points, VVV fails to take over fifteenth place from FC Emmen. RKC remains fourteenth and also has to do everything in its power to preserve life in the Eredivisie.

Luhukay was able to use Giakoumakis again from the start against RKC, after the striker had to go to the side after an hour of play in the match against Heracles Almelo after an hour of play with complaints to his knee. The striker had recovered sufficiently and immediately proved his worth when he was at the end of a nice attack by VVV after three minutes of play. Vito van Crooij was sent off on the right side of the field, delivered a tailor-made cross and saw how Giakoumakis could easily finish in front of the goal. It was already the 25th goal of the season for the striker, after he failed to score in his last four games on behalf of VVV.

VVV tried to seize the initiative in the initial phase, but had to see how RKC immediately hit target with the first good opportunity. With the outside of the left shoe, Ahmed Touba set Thijs Oosting free for goalkeeper Thorsten Kirschbaum, after which the RKC midfielder stayed cool and took the equalizer. Fred Grim’s team seized the equalizer to turn the game over, which the Waalwijkers were quite successful in. After half an hour of play, RKC even took the brutal lead. Vurnon Anita conquered the ball and delivered it to Richard van der Venne, after which Cyril Ngonge lashed out effectively in the right corner from about twenty meters: 1-2.

Luhukay’s team did not give in and did something back before half-time via Ola John, who hit the target on a pass from again Van Crooij. In the second act, the game went the same way and it was Van Crooij who seemed to decide the game ten minutes before the end. The winger made a nice header on a pass from Lukas Schmitz, but had to swallow the equalizer with his team not much later. A free kick by Ngonge ended up on an outstretched arm of Giakoumakis, after which referee Jochem Kamphuis pointed to the spot and Ngonge took advantage of the opportunity himself: 3-3. VVV thus ended a series of twelve defeats in a row, but makes very little progress with the point.
