Vitesse finally managed to win a victory in the Eredivisie on Sunday afternoon. The match against FC Groningen was won 0-1 thanks to a goal from Matús Bero. Afterwards, the chagrin splashed off in De Euroborg. Frank Wormuth’s team underperformed, while Vitesse showed improvement compared to the matches played earlier this season.

At Groningen, Florian Krüger was immediately in the starting lineup, replacing Jørgen Strand Larsen, who left for Celta de Vigo on Deadline Day for a record amount of eleven million euros. Vitesse had three debutants at the kick-off: Gabriel Vidovic, Bartosz Bialek and Daan Reiziger. Mitchell Dijks was not yet part of the Arnhem team, while goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen also had to let the game pass by. As a result, Reiziger was allowed to make his debut under the bar. The young closing post was achieved last summer as the third goalkeeper, but is developing excellently at Vitesse.

Vitesse showed a strong appearance in Groningen in the initial phase. In the twelfth minute Thomas Letsch’s team thought they would take the lead, when Bayern mercenary Vidovic managed to push the ball behind Michael Verrips on a pass from Carlens Arcus. However, the VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for offside. The home team, in particular, was very disappointed before the break. Groningen hardly managed to create chances and let Vitesse become dangerous a number of times. At halftime, the glasses position was nevertheless on the scoreboard.

After the break Frank Wormuth’s team looked a bit more eager, although the game at the ball remained sloppy. The German head coach exchanged Paulos Abraham and Isak Määttä for Liam van Gelderen and Yahya Kalley. After opportunities for Bialek and Vidovic, Vitesse finally hit it in minute 79. Captain Bero managed to outsmart Verrips with a low shot with a lot of feeling. Then a free kick by Radinio Balker hit the post. In the final phase, Vitesse managed to secure the first three-pointer of the season, as a result of which the Arnhem team are now in fourteenth place in the Eredivisie. Groningen, which did not even come up with a real final offensive, is in a disappointing twelfth place after five games.
