Vinícius Júnior speaks out on New Year’s Eve via Twitter about racism in football. The Real Madrid attacker is disappointed that he is still being treated racistly and that LaLiga is not doing anything about it in his eyes. Images that are doing the rounds on social media show and hear that the Brazilian has to deal with racism from the stands after his substitution against Real Valladolid (0-2 win) on Friday.

The images show how Vinícius receives the necessary racist insults from the Valladolid supporters when passing the goal of teammate Thibaut Courtois. Real’s attacker is called ‘monkey’ in Spanish and monkey sounds can also be heard. Vinícius is so fed up with this that he kicks an object thrown from the audience in anger. Then he continues his way to the locker room The Royal.

A day after the incident during Real’s away match, Vinícius made a statement on social media. “Racists continue to visit the stadiums and take a closer look at the biggest club in the world,” the indignant Brazilian opens. “And LaLiga just keeps doing nothing… But I will carry on with my head held high and celebrate my victories and those of Madrid. In the end it’s MY fault,” the Real player ends on a somewhat cryptic note.

It is not the first time that Vinícius has been confronted with racism in Spain. This was already the case prior to the city derby with Atlético Madrid in September. In the run-up to the clash at the Wanda Metropolitano, several hundred supporters of Atlético could be heard chanting ‘Vinícius, you are a monkey, you are a monkey’. According to various local media, monkey noises and insults towards the 22-year-old Brazilian could also be heard during the derby at the time.
