Latest update:

John van 't Schip seems to be open to a longer stay as trainer of Ajax, says journalist Johan Inan of the Algemeen Dagblad in the AD Football podcast from Tuesday. The sixty-year-old coach is on paper head coach of Ajax until June 30, after which he will continue in the technical management of the Amsterdam team from July 1.

In the daily podcast of the A.D the coaching in the Johan Cruijff ArenA is discussed. “What I have understood so far is that Ajax simply plans to appoint a new trainer for next season,” said Inan.

“Now it is of course true that Van 't Schip can make things difficult for them,” Inan continues. “If he finishes third and manages to help Ajax win a Champions League ticket from a defeated position, then he automatically becomes a serious candidate.”

Inan notices a change. “Until now that was not the intention. He also said that at the beginning, but what you notice now… If he were still in the same position now, he would have simply answered this question and said that it is not a theme. The fact that he leaves it open indicates to me that he would love to stay at Ajax as a trainer for another season. He consciously keeps it open.”

The journalist himself thinks it is a good thing that Van 't Schip has not completely ruled it out. “It is a good ambition and keeps him and the selection sharp. He really wanted to have another experienced player to increase the chance of third place, because that would automatically give him better credentials.”

“I doubt whether it will happen. In any case, that is not an issue for now, because there will first be a new technical director who will weigh in on the matter.” Van 't Schip has been employed as Ajax's trainer since October 30. Since then, the Amsterdam team has played sixteen official matches, ten of which ended with a win.

In the Europa League, Brighton & Hove Albion (0-2) and Olympique Marseille (4-3) were still too strong, while in the competition the points were shared with PEC Zwolle (2-2), Almere City (2-2) and leader PSV (1-1). An absolute low point was the cup defeat against the amateurs of USV Hercules (3-2).
