Rafael van der Vaart has been relegated with Esbjerg to the third level of Denmark. The Danish club suffered its sixteenth league defeat of the season on Wednesday evening. Van der Vaart was appointed at the beginning of March as one of the persons ultimately responsible, but he was also unable to prevent Esbjerg’s relegation in the end.
Esbjerg’s relegation became a fact on Wednesday with a 2-3 home defeat against Fremad Amager. Van der Vaart saw how his team took a 2-0 lead within fifteen minutes via Emil Holten and Mads Larsen, but the victory was completely handed over in the remainder of the game. Esbjerg is relegated for the first time in 28 years due to the defeat.
