Andries Jonker has announced the provisional selection of the the Dutch Lionesses for next summer’s World Cup. The national coach will in any case take Shanice van de Sanden and Kika van Es with him in the beginning of the preparation for the tournament. The selection will meet for the first time on June 19. On June 30, seven more players will be eliminated.

For example, there is hope for Van de Sanden and Van Es to play a new major tournament, after the pair were not invited to the European Championship by Jonker’s predecessor Mark Parsons last year. Thirty-year-old Van de Sande, who has been playing for Liverpool for a year, came out for the 93rd and last time for the Lionesses a year and a half ago.

Van Es comes from a very difficult period, in which she had a miscarriage and then fought various injuries. The 31-year-old defender of PSV recently announced that he would retire this summer, but kept hopes of being selected for the World Cup. Both Van de Sanden and Van Es were in the selections for the 2017 European Championship won and the 2019 World Cup lost in the final. They were also present at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were completed a year later due to corona.

The Netherlands will have to do without star player Vivianne Miedema at the upcoming World Cup, who suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in December. The world championship will take place from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand. The Netherlands will meet Portugal, Vietnam and reigning world champions the United States in the group stage.
