Giovanni van Bronckhorst is a candidate at Rangers to succeed Steven Gerrard who left for Aston Villa, Fabrizio Romano reports. The transfer market expert says the board of the Scottish top club will make ‘official contacts’ with the potential new managers during next weekend. According to Romano, a conversation between Van Bronckhorst and Rangers is on the program.

Gerrard was officially appointed on Thursday as the new manager of Aston Villa, where the Englishman succeeds the fired Dean Smith. Even before his departure from Rangers was announced, there was already speculation in Scotland about his succession. The bookmakers made Van Bronckhorst the favorite to succeed Gerrard, ahead of Frank Lampard, Alex Neil and Derek McInnes.

Romano reports that Van Bronckhorst is on the list of potential successors to Gerrard along with two other unnamed managers. It seems unlikely at this point that Lampard has a place on this list, as the former Chelsea manager at Norwich City looks set to succeed the sacked Daniel Farke. Neil – former manager of Hamilton, Norwich City and Preston North End – is currently without a club, while McInnes is with Aberdeen.

Since his departure from the Chinese Guangzhou R&F in December 2020, Van Bronckhorst has been without a club. The former left back previously worked successfully as a trainer of Feyenoord for four seasons and in 2017 became national champion with the Rotterdam club. Van Bronckhorst also won the KNVB Cup twice and the Johan Cruijff Scale twice with Feyenoord. As a footballer, he played for Rangers for three years from 1998, with which he won two national titles, among other things. According to Romano, Van Bronckhorst would be interested in a return to Glasgow.
