Pelé van Anholt will continue his career at Roda JC Kerkrade, the club from the Kitchen Champion Division reported on Saturday. The versatile defender has signed a contract for the remainder of the season, with an option for another year. He will immediately join the selection of trainer Jurgen Streppel, who is in sixth place with the Limburgers.

“Pelé is a multifunctional defender who is cut from the right stuff as a professional football player,” Streppel explains on the club site. “With his thirty years and more than 160 Eredivisie matches, he brings a lot of experience with him. Capturing Pelé gives us more opportunities in the rear, and he can also play well in the back positions.”

Van Anholt started his career in the youth of sc Heerenveen. After several seasons at successively FC Emmen, Heerenveen and Willem II, the defender made the switch to the American Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer of 2017. After this foreign adventure he continued his career at NAC Breda after which he moved to the Cypriot Enosis Neon from Paralimni.

In the past six months he kept his condition up at Heerenveen and a trial period at FC Groningen came to nothing. “Recently I have had several conversations with Jurgen Streppel and Jordens Peters, with whom I played together at Willem II in the 2016/17 season,” says Van Anholt. “During these conversations I noticed a certain ambition of the club that I can relate to. I am therefore very proud to sign with this great club and I look forward to playing in the beautiful Parkstad Limburg Stadium.”
