Hamburger SV again failed to get away from the 2. Bundesliga. HSV lost a great starting position at home on Monday evening against Hertha BSC, which, thanks to a 0-2 victory, is certain of promotion to the highest German level. That was enough to wipe out the 0-1 victory that HSV had booked in Berlin last Thursday. Hertha, for example, barely survives a dramatic year in the Bundesliga, while HSV is already facing its fifth season at the second level.

HSV needed a trick last week to be allowed to participate in the play-offs for promotion/relegation at all. Tim Walter’s team made a great comeback on the final day in the regular competition against Hansa Rostock and turned a deficit into a 2-3 win, which resulted in the third final ranking. Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen also took the first two places and were therefore immediately certain of promotion.

When HSV then surprisingly won the first leg of the play-offs against Hertha with 0-1 (thanks to a goal by Ludovit Reis), hopes grew in Hamburg to finally be able to return to the Bundesliga. In the return match in the capital, however, it went wrong after five minutes on Monday when Dedryck Boyata headed in from a corner: 0-1. Marvin Plattenhardt, who provided the assist for the opening goal, surprised HSV goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes after more than an hour of play by shooting a free kick over the keeper: 0-2. HSV failed to concede the necessary goal – even after Lucas Tousart ran into his second yellow card deep in injury time – and is left empty-handed.
