Folarin Balogun is going to complete his international matches for the United States, it became clear on Tuesday. The striker, who is rented from Arsenal by Stade Reims, was born in New York but grew up in London. The 21-year-old striker played four times for the US Under 18 in 2018, but more recently played thirteen times for England Under 21. the Three Lions so it won’t come.

Balogun is experiencing his absolute breakthrough at the highest level this season. For Reims, which is led by success coach Will Still, he has already scored nineteen (!) goals in 34 games in Ligue 1. The American is therefore fifth on the top scorers list, together with Loïs Openda from RC Lens, behind Habib Diallo (20 ), Jonathan David (21), Alexandre Lacazette (24) and Kylian Mbappe (26). England Under 21 coach Lee Carsley announced in March that he would hold talks with Balogun to keep him for England. As it turns out, that attempt was in vain. Balogun says in a statement that he came to his decision after consultation with his family.

“In the end it was an easy choice,” says the 21-year-old attacker. “I wanted to make this choice and I feel at home here. It means a lot to me to represent the United States, more than people know. I am very proud and honored to be given this opportunity and now I want everything to make our team successful.” Completely out of the blue, Balogun’s choice occurs Team USA not. He was due to participate in England Under 21 in March, but the attacker was unable to play due to injury. Balogun was spotted in Orlando shortly afterwards, sparking rumors of an upcoming US international career. Interim national coach Anthony Hudson quickly confirmed that an attempt was actually made to convince Balogun.

“We’ve had good conversations with Flo and his agent,” Hudson said. “To let him know what we’re doing, how we see his future with us. That way he can get a feel for the country, the team and the boys.” Hudson can now finally cheer. “Not only is he an extremely talented player, he is also a good person who adds value to our national team, both at as off the field. It is clear that he appreciates his American roots and we can’t wait to welcome him to the team.” For the striker position, Balogun has to compete with Jesus Ferreira (FC Dallas), Ricardo Pepi (FC Groningen) and Haji Wright ( Antalyaspor).
