Manchester United has broken open and extended Alejandro Garnacho’s contract, the club announced on Friday through the official channels. The twenty-year-old Argentinian is therefore stuck at Old Trafford until mid-2028. Manager Erik ten Hag, however, had only news for his pupil last week: Garnacho will not participate in the Under 20 World Cup in his home country. Ten Hag does not want to take any risks with the right leg and expects to need it at the end of the season.

During a press conference, Ten Hag announced on Friday that Garnacho will not travel to Argentina for the Under 20 World Cup. “No, we will not let him go. He will soon resume group training, partially, then we will see when he can fully return to the group and make his appearance in competitions again.” Garnacho has been struggling with an ankle injury for over a month, so he had to miss the necessary duels. The Under 20 World Cup is on the agenda at the end of May, but Garnacho will not be there.

Still, Garnacho was especially happy with his contract extension on Friday, the winger said via United’s club channel. He also had nice words for Ten Hag. “The manager and his coaching staff helped me to improve myself in every way. Thanks to their support, I know how to develop myself every day.” Garnacho has made 31 official appearances for United so far, scoring four goals and five assists.

John Murtough, director of football at United, is extremely pleased with Garnacho’s longer commitment. “Alejandro has enormous potential. We are all looking forward to seeing him fulfill his ambitions at United.” Ten Hag will hope that Marcus Rashford follows Garnacho’s example in the short term. The contract of the 25-year-old trendsetter expires in mid-2024, while talks about a new commitment have not yet led to an agreement.
