Gary Lineker says Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Manchester United was completed in his backyard. The former football player and presenter of Match of the Day is a close friend and neighbor of Ed Woodward, the general manager of Manchester United. Woodward was visiting Lineker at the time Ronaldo’s return to the Red Devils was completed.

“I’ll be honest: Ed Woodward is a good friend of mine and my neighbor. When he brought Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United, he was in my backyard! The moment he entered, he was on the phone with Jorge Mendes (Ronaldo’s agent, ed.). I have a fantastic photo of the scene, maybe I’ll share it someday if he gives permission,” Lineker said in the interview. Match of the Day Top 10 podcast.

Alan Shearer thinks Manchester United can compete for the trophies by bringing Ronaldo back. “That has been different in recent years, but with Ronaldo everything looks different. It was a no brainer for Manchester United. They sold Daniel James for thirty million euros (to Leeds United, ed.) and brought back Ronaldo for the same amount.”

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last summer after 12 years, having played for Real Madrid and Juventus in the intervening years. The 36-year-old Portuguese attacker signed a two-year contract with an option for another year. Ronaldo has scored five goals in his first six games since his return to Manchester United.
